Dawn Chorus

admin Birds 0 0

Have you noticed that the birds are a little more vocal of late? Yes, the spring has begun and the birds are very conscious of the increasing day length. In fact all sorts of physiological changes are now taking place to the birds. Their reproductive systems are developing in preparation for breeding and egg laying. Testosterone levels are rising in the males and that is why they are starting to sing. It’s different for each species though. The first to start singing are the robins which have been at it since just after Christmas. Within two weeks of the shortest day of the year (21st December) the song thrushes start and in the past few days I have heard the first of the blackbirds. If you take the time to listen tomorrow morning you will first hear the robin when it is still pitch dark. Then as the first shafts of light appear in the east you will hear the song thrush. You will know him because he repeats his phrases three of four times in his song. Dada, dada, dada, (pause) di, di, di, di. Once you pick up the call you will be able to identify each individual as they are all slightly different. Why not wake up at 6am in the morning and listen to your back garden wildlife unfold. Enjoy the wonders of nature on your doorstep.
